Leipzig sightseeing

Old City Hall
The Old Town Hall is one of the most imposing and impressive buildings in Leipzig. It was built in 1556 in Renaissance style by Hieronymus Lotter and must now rank among the most ancient and most beautiful town halls of the Renaissance. Particularly interesting are the huge ballroom, the council chamber, the Mendelssohn-room, the armory and the treasury.
Opera Leipzig
The opera reflects the elegant symbiosis of classic architectural heritage and modernity. The opera, built by Kunz Nierade on 8th October 1960, occupies the entire northern front of Augustus Square, offering a magnificent sight. But the opera is not only to be admired from the outside. The detail of the design increases from outside to inside continously. The most impressive things are probably the pillars and walls paneled with porcelain plates and the floor paved with black diabase. In addition, the stage belongs with its retractable podia and the revolving stage today to the most modern theater venues.
The night life in Leipzig is known for its diversity and dynamism. Of the many student pubs which were founded 1968 in the course of the university reform, the Moritzbastei is probably the most famous one. The Moritzbastei extends to three floors below ground. There are regular concerts, festivals or Vernissages. Furthermore, in summer season the roof of the Moritzbastei becomes a stage for plays and open-air cinema. Other good addresses for night owls are the Gottsched street, the Karl-Liebknecht street and the Connewitz district.
